‘This is the first time that people have gathered to celebrate blue plaques in South Broxtowe

T H Barton, the founder of Bartons plc, formerly Barton Transport plc, is the first person in this area to be commemorated by what will be a series of blue plaques celebrating local people and places.  This first plaque, at1 High Road , Chilwell, beside T H Barton’s own office window which he left 64 years ago, was unveiled by "local lad" Sir Neil Cossons, former Chairman of English Heritage.

The local plaque scheme is a collaborative effort by this Society, the Beeston & District Local History Society and the Stapleford and District Local History Society, supported by owners and others.

The object is to celebrate people who have made an impact on the local community and beyond and to encourage a better understanding of familiar local places that go unmarked.  A number of plaques are planned for South Broxtowe over the coming months.  An initial list includes: the astronomer,  Edward Joseph Lowe; the boxer William Thompson, (known as Bendigo); the son-in-law of Cromwell, General Henry Ireton; the largest net curtain manufacturer in Europe, Francis Wilkinson; the celebrated Baptist, the Rev. Dr John Clifford; the engineer and cycle manufacturer, Thomas Humber; the journalist and prolific author, Arthur Mee, the distinguished naval officer Admiral Sir John Borlase Warren; and possibly the historian and author Arthur Cossons, father of Sir Neil Cossons. The 14th century Village Cross in Beeston, found by Arthur Cossons and re-erected in 1929, will also be marked.
